What You’ll Learn in This Course

 
  • You’ll learn about the two most common species of coffee available on the market to make coffee, about the effects of different processing methods and roast degrees on coffees flavor, and how to understand from the information on a coffee bean package if the coffee beans will be ideal for espresso.

  • You’ll then learn how to maximize the shelf-life of your espresso beans and how to design your espresso workflow to preserve freshness.

  • You’ll learn what essential equipment and ingredients that you’ll want to have at your espresso bar to make quality beverages.

  • Burns are the biggest occupational hazard of using espresso machines and grinders have sharp burrs. You’ll learn how to avoid injury when preparing espresso by being mindful of the potential hazards.

  • Quality espresso requires a repeatable recipe. You’ll learn the essential components of an espresso recipe and how to create a recipe according to your or your customer’s taste preferences.

  • Using an espresso recipe, you’ll go on to learn how to dial in your recipe so that it tastes great, with an ideal balance of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness, a great body, and a pleasant finish. You’ll learn how to methodically dial in espresso to avoid confusion which so often results in wasted time and coffee.

  • You’ll learn the workflow to efficiently pull shots and steam milk using the same steps that the World Barista Championship competitors use to make 12 beverages in 15 minutes. These steps not only result in a taste beverage quickly, but they also build in workstation management to keep your espresso clean and organized.

  • Microfoam is dense, smooth, and wet milk foam that makes for a milk beverage with amazing texture. You’ll learn the three essential phases to steaming microfoam and how to polish your milk to minimize bubbles and ensure that your milk and foam is well integrated when you pour a beverage.

  • Once you can steam microfoam, we’re ready to start pouring latte art. During the course, you’ll learn the steps to pour a heart pattern, one of the essential latte art patterns.

  • We’ll then put the espresso and milk steaming skills together to craft americanos, long blacks, cortados, espresso macchiatos, cappuccinos, and latte macchiatos. You’ll be given a recipe for each of these beverages and then make each one.

  • We’ll wrap up this course with a tutorial on how to clean and maintain your espresso machine and grinder. You’ll also be given product and tool recommendations to be able to keep your equipment clean and in good working order.

 
 

Get Globally Recognized Barista Certification

At the end of this course, you’ll take a written exam based on what you will learn during the course. When you pass that exam, you’ll get a certificate from the most widely recognized certification authority, the Specialty Coffee Association.

When learning important coffee skills, you want to learn from someone with extensive experience and an understanding of research-based coffee theory.

This is where I come in!

My name is Trent Rollings, I’ve been in the specialty coffee industry for 10 years, with experience as a barista, cafe owner, and coffee bar designer. I’m also a certified judge for World Coffee Championships. I use this experience as well as my personal coffee skills, honed over many years to help you learn coffee preparation during this course.
