SCA Coffee Courses Now Available in Calgary.

Calgary, Alberta – The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) is a name synonymous with excellence in coffee education, leaning on qualified research to back up its methodology. Renowned worldwide, SCA's commitment to nurturing coffee professionals has set new benchmarks in the industry. We're thrilled to announce that Simpler Coffee is now offering accredited SCA courses in Calgary, making this quality coffee education more accessible to coffee professionals and enthusiasts in western Canada.

SCA Course Benefits

SCA courses can open doors to new opportunities and career advancements in the coffee industry and provide students with in depth knowledge and practical experience for the topic they are studying. Courses offer a comprehensive understanding of coffee, with the goal of increasing both personal enjoyment and professional expertise.

All students who successfully complete an SCA course, passing any required written or practical exams, receive a certificate from the Specialty Coffee Association. SCA certificates are the most renowned in the coffee industry and are recognized globally .

In addition to getting individual course certification, students can also complete a required set of courses to receive a coffee skills diploma. Cafe, roastery, coffee trade, and sustainable coffee diplomas are currently available through the Specialty Coffee Association.

Taught by Trent Rollings

All SCA courses offered by Simpler Coffee are taught by World Barista Championship certified judge and coffee consultant Trent Rollings. Trent’s passion is to help simplify complex coffee concepts and skills through hands on, interactive practical experience. All of Trent’s courses incorporate his personal experience as a cafe and roastery owner, educator, and championship judge.

Courses currently available

Courses from the following tracks and courses are now available on the course calendar with plans to make additional tracks such as sensory skills and green coffee available in the future.

  • Introduction to Coffee: This foundational course offers a comprehensive overview of the coffee value chain and is an excellent starting point for coffee enthusiasts and newcomers to the industry.

  • Barista Skills: These courses focus on key barista techniques, allowing students to develop and refine their espresso preparation and milk texturing skills.

  • Brewing: Explore various brewing methods, understand extraction principles, and learn how to brew a delicious cup across different equipment.

  • Coffee Sustainability: Gain insights into the social, economic, and environmental considerations of the coffee industry and learn about sustainable practices from bean to cup.

All tracks, with the exception of Introduction to Coffee, will be made available at foundation, intermediate, and professional levels.

Joining a public course

Starting October 30, 2023, public courses will take place at School House Roasting, a collaborative roasting space in Calgary that is home to renowned Calgary coffee brands such as Monogram, Apex Coffee, and David Kim Coffee.

Scheduling a private course

Courses can also be scheduled privately for groups of two or more and can be held at School House Coffee or at a location of the learner’s choice such as a coffee shop, restaurant, or hotel (providing that the facility has sufficient equipment for the course).
