Our 2022 Coffee Lover’s Gift Guide

Hey, Christine here, I’m Trent’s wife and I’ll be occasionally contributing posts like this to simpler.coffee.

As a coffee lover myself being married to a coffee professional, Christmas time means exploration of new coffee gear for gift giving. This list started from not only my own research, but Trent’s response to my question, “Hey, what do you want for Christmas?”

For the filter coffee lover

Hario Switch

I can’t get this for Trent for Christmas, because he already has it and loves it. But it’s first on the list because this tried and true brew method may just elevate your morning and afternoon cups.

Why we love it: This brew method combines the conical shape gravity brew of the V60 with the control of an immersion dripper - allowing for more flexibility to brew small batches, higher brew time for an iced flash brew, and the ability for more consistent extraction.

It’s also pretty.

Etkin Dripper

I love this dripper’s origin story because we can all relate: Michael, a husband and father of three, was brewing coffee for himself and his wife during the height of lockdown in Istanbul. In the coziness of their small apartment without any outdoor space, Michael needed to brew two V60s in order to get them the quantity needed to get through the day. As he brewed, he wife, Julie, pondered, “Could we create some kind of hand brewer that would make more coffee at once?” Michael got to work.

And here you have the Etkin Dripper, an 8-cup manual flat-bed brewing device (kind of like a Kalita Wave), designed and produced here in Turkey. You’ll want this once for your holiday gatherings.

Fellow Ode Grinder

We’ve chose this grinder for our Airbnb coffee set up because of its simple use and sleek design. It offers a consistent grind that’s quick and quiet - and pairs nicely next to the Stagg Kettle. Designed for daily home use, this flat burr grinder is also great for cafe use as well because of it’s quality and durability.

Barisieur Alarm Clock Coffee Maker

So Trent suggested this one and I know he’s dreaming (and wishing he could wake up to coffee right beside the bed). But hey, this is the perfect gift for the coffee-lover on your list who may have every other gadget out there. Do yourself a favor and watch this review of the product.

Onyx Advent Calendar

Gorgeous and creative design, the Onyx Advent Calendar gives you 24 different coffees in small sample bags to try each day of December leading up to Christmas. As an annual tradition, this year’s comes with a game board folding out to reveal Onyx Coffee Land complete with a flavor wheel spinner. Scroll their their website to look at the list of coffee offerings and special surprises you’ll get in this one-of-a-kind gift, delivered to you … I mean, your gift recipient, by December 1.

For the espresso lover

Subminimal NanoFoamer, Handheld Milk Foamer

Often when Trent judges for national or international coffee competitions, he comes home with fun new coffee toys. This handheld milk foamer was one of them and I was convinced it would just take up space in our coffee cabinet. It turns out, this is one piece of equipment that I adore. All summer, I used it to make cold foam for iced lattes - frothing the milk to perfection (it did take some practice) for the best refreshing coffee drink.

The goal behind this Kickstarter (it’s now available on Amazon) is to be able to give you the best micro-foam at home to make your own latte art. Friends, it’s possible. Watch this review to learn more.

Fellow Junior Espresso Cups (Set of 2)

We are in love with Fellow’s ceramic cups. So modern, so classy, so sophisticated! They come in different sizes. Their smaller Junior cups are perfect for enjoying a straight up espresso shot or espresso macchiato. Junior cups come in a set of 2 so that you can have a classy morning espresso with that special someone.

KNODOS WDT Espresso Stirrer

A WDT (Weiss Distribution Tool) is a comb-like espresso accessory that is designed to help achieve a more even extraction. It does this by breaking up any clumps in the coffee bed and more evenly spreading out the ground coffee throughout the portafilter. It’s a simple tool that achieves some great results. In fact, this year’s World Barista Champion, Anthony Douglas, used a version of a WDT when preparing his espressos.

For stockings & gift exchanges

Book: How To Make The Best Coffee At Home (James Hoffmann)

Whenever I need to learn about a particular brew method or want to explore reviews on new equipment, I look no further than James Hoffmann’s YouTube channel. Now all of his coffee home brewing knowledge is compiled into one book. But don’t take our word for it, you can watch his own review of…his own book.

(Pssst, I’ll probably get this for Trent for Christmas, but promise you won’t tell him.)

Third Wave Water

A must-have when we travel. This is another one that’s tried and true for us - you add a sachet of the perfectly dosed minerals to a gallon of distilled water you can get at any grocery store (in some parts of the world).

Note: Each packet is for a gallon specifically, so if you’re in a country where you’re buying water in liters, you’ll need to do some quick math.
